Katarina began skating when she was five years old. Her talent soon became obvious and she was accepted into a school specifically designed for children with a talent for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. There she had a conversation with their teacher Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her mark in the year 1982 when she placed second in her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught the attention of everyone at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the game. Olympic triumphs at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt fought hard in a tightly race to claim the women's figure skating gold medal. It was her victory from four years prior that was even closer. Actually, she did not win the free skating contest however, she was awarded gold for her results during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run as an actor. The crowd was captivated by her despite the fact that she only was seventh. It was in 1995 that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
